the fall campaign. mission accomplished! we'll tell you all about last night's grand finale here in charlotte, north carolina. but we start off as always, let's find out the latest, today's current news update, lisa ferguson out in los angeles. hey, lisa, good morning. >> hi, bill. good morning everyone. bill is still there. most convention goers are packing up and heading home this morning after a rousing and emotional final night at the dnc in charlotte. president obama's speech has a convention hall at full capacity. officials had to turn away hundreds of people. nearly four hours before the president took the podium. it was not exactly the soaring rhetoric we're used to coming from mr. obama but it was effective nonetheless. >> we can give more tax breaks to corporations that ship jobs overseas or we can start rewarding companies that open new plants and train new workers and create new jobs here in the united states of america. >> mr. obama laid out specific

goals and proposals for his second term in office. touching on the economy education, medicare, veterans and making a powerful case that we are better off today than we were four years ago. the address beat out every single other convention speech on twitter. according to the web site, president obama had nearly 53,000 tweets per minute compare that to mitt romney's speech that got just 14,000 a minute. one other interesting note, this was the shortest acceptance speech we've heard from a presidential nominee in the last 36 years. mr. obama clocked in at 38 minutes and 23 seconds. according to research from c-span, the last person to go shorter than that was gerald ford and that was in 1976. bill clinton holds the record for the longest speech. he's coming in at about 65 minutes and that was back in 1996. more bill is coming up live from charlotte after the break. as always, we're hoping you will

release, the former nightly news anchor took to his twitter account later in the day to say all is fine. he admitted to mistakenly taking ambien and was making less sense than usual. it took him out of an abundance of caution but in a dig to the first football game of the season, he said he made a better comeback than the new york giants. >> ouch. >> bill: taking an ambien in the morning? >> i've heard a lot of weird ways to trip out. that's a new one. >> bill: little tricky, isn't it? i took two this morning just to see what it was like. >> oh, really? good. >> billboard is out with its annual song of the summer title and it should be no surprise to anyone that it is "call me, maybe" by canadian singer carly rae jepsen. it is one of the most parodied songs ever including videos done by the u.s. olympic swim team, sesame street's cookie monster and u.s. troops in afghanistan. >> bill: it was also done by the obama girl?

>> they did a very clever mash up of a bunch of barack obama speeches where he actually sang the song. it was very clever. >> and ben & jerry's ice cream is headed to court. not something you would normally hear about the vermont-based company. they are suing a pornographic filmmaker for selling x-rated films that scoop their ben & jerry's labels and flavors. the "new york post" reports one dvd cover reads porno's finest ben and cherry's peanut butter d cup. other names are too x-rated to mention here on the air. >> oh, no, go ahead. >> no, no. the ice cream label reads vermont's finest, ben & jerry's. they're not happy. >> thank you dan. >> bill: thank you for not reading all of the pornographic names from the ben & jerry's ice cream. >> stop drinking beer and playing with the beer cans. >> bill: i just want to get

the evidence lined up here. barack obama maybe back looking for his water glass. >> is that vodka or gin? >> bill: for his bud light. >> stop drinking. >> bill: i gotta tell you, you know, this was a great convention. a great great three days and it really wrapped up in fine form last night. and i think this convention will go down, what a contrast with tampa. this is a convention that told the truth. and tampa was the convention that just told nothing but lies, lies lies. no lies here. joe biden told the truth. barack obama told the truth. bill clinton told the truth. and i think there were two goals of this convention. what democrats are trying to accomplish here is let the world know what they had accomplished so far in the last four years and where barack obama wants to take the country for the next four years if re-elected and when he's re-elected and certainly, you gotta say mission accomplished for the very -- to

the various speakers from michelle obama and the headliners, michelle obama and bill clinton joe biden, barack obama and a lot of the secondary speakers. mission accomplished. they also had to -- at the same time, while they were at it, sort of a secondary goal is make sure the people understood what lies they had heard in tampa and what the truth really was. i think that mission was accomplished as well. so huge success i believe in getting the message out. they were really focused. they were really on message. when it comes to the speakers, you know, the evening the major speakers were all there between 10:00 and 11:00 east coast time. 7:00 to 8:00 on the west coast. but there were -- the secondary speakers, it was funny. each night, there was sort of one person that blew the place up and really lit the place up. and became an instant star. the first night was duvall patrick, governor of

massachusetts. the night after him so wednesday night was congressman emmanuel clever from maryland and last night, i gotta tell you last night was our own current tv's own jennifer granholm, host of "the war room," of course. former governor of michigan. she was on fire! and she had a lot of great lines. one of the lines that's most repeated, i think is what she said about mitt romney's car elevator. >> people who design and build and sell those cars, well, in romney's world the cars get the elevator and the workers get the shaft. [ cheers & applause ] >> bill: people loved that line. they loved her. joe biden even gave her a little shout out there when he began his remarks. and joe biden, i gotta tell you man, people worked all day in interviews, people were asking, interviews i did people were

asking, you know, are you worried about joe biden tonight? are you worried he's going to go off message? i said come on. joe biden is going to be great. and he was. i have never heard him give a better speech. i mean he was on message. he was on point. he was full of passion. and he gave a very passionate profile of what it's like to work with barack obama. a man of steel. he talked about the bravery in obama's heart. >> bravery resides in the heart of barack obama and time and time again. i witnessed him summon it. this man has courage in his soul, compassion in his heart and a spine of steel. >> bill: spine of steel. and one of the ways that he showed he has a spine of steel joe biden pointed out was going after osama bin laden, a very, very risky mission and joe summed up the accomplishments of the first four years.

>> because of the calls he made, because of the determination of american workers and the unparalleled bravery of our special forces, we can now proudly say what you've heard me say the last six months. osama bin laden is dead. and general motors is alive. >> bill: you can hear the crowd chanting along with joe biden there. real, real tour de force followed of course by the video introducing president obama. michelle obama briefly at the podium to introduce her husband and president obama gave a masterful, brilliant speech. 37 minutes long. where again he told the american people what his goals were. what his vision is for the next four years. what his priorities are and he made it clear over and over and over again on every issue. whether it is immigration or the environment or war and peace or

energy, it's a choice. it's a choice between two radically different paths to the future. and as president obama, he started out by accepting the nomination of this party. >> madam chairwoman, delegates i accept your nomination for president of the united states. [ cheers & applause ] >> bill: he had a lot of fun sort of poking fun at sarcastically, the republicans. he said, you know, for everything -- all they ever think of is tax cuts are the cure for everything. >> have a surplus? try a tax cut. deficit too high? try another. feel a cold coming on? take two tax cuts, roll back some regulations and call us in the morning. >> bill: he also had fun with mitt romney back to the olympic moment where romney got off the plane in london and ripped into the brits saying he doubted that they could pull off the olympics. not a smart move, said the

president. >> you might not be ready for diplomacy with beijing if you can't visit the olympics without insulting our closest ally! >> bill: amateur hour when it comes to foreign policy but the president, he talked about veterans. mitt romney never mentioned veterans. never mentioned military families. and then the president ended up by saying, come on, got right down to it. i want it and i need your vote! >> if you believe in a country where everyone gets a fair shot and everyone does their fair share and everyone plays by the same rules then i need you to vote this november. >> bill: so off we go! out of charlotte into the campaign. president on the road today. what did you think? joe biden, barack obama 1-866-55-press. did they deliver the goods here in charlotte north carolina? fellow progressives, fellow liberals, fellow americans let's talk it here on the "full

bill kris was wonderful talking from florida. i don't know if you caught that earlier. he told us -- >> bill: charlie crist. >> caller: charlie crist, i'm sorry. he said republicans are beholden to their donors and they're lying to us. that's why he was at the convention. it was a great testimony to what the other side is all about. i thought the whole convention was just great. >> bill: yeah, go ahead john. >> caller: if you're a democrat, you need to get out there and campaign and donate and get on the phones and help out the president. if you want to see another four years of a good presidency and a future for all of our americans you need to get active, democrats. >> bill: john, that's the message. i gotta tell you i admit my own political bias, i don't see how anybody could watch the president last night and not come away inspire and impressed and not come away determined not just to vote for the man but to get throughout and help get him a second term and get out there and work your butts off. here we are in charlotte wrapping up the democratic

three, i thought, fantastic nights in a row. richard has been here broadcasting, like us, from the democratic national convention. he's a nationally syndicated talk radio host. hear him locally in washington, d.c. where we start out the day i'm proud to say richard is policy director of the young democrats of america. richard, good to see you this morning. >> it is good to be here, bill. what a difference a couple of hours make in this arena. >> bill: oh, yeah. like it is totally empty this morning. >> exactly. and they're taking stuff down and we got a couple of hours. my producer said you got an hour or two. and we're back here. >> bill: here we are. thank you for coming by. last night first night with michelle obama absolute home run. second night with bill clinton absolute home run. joe biden and barack obama last

night, what did you think? >> it was a home run both for the vice president and the president last night. i think joe biden, they had the attack lines are in there. they took it home for the american people and for the democrats in this stadium. i got a chance to hear the president's speech. i was in my camera position for indian television and we were right above -- right above the crowd. and to see how the crowd reacted to every single word that president obama said last night is not only amazing but is a testament to what this president has been able to accomplish in the first four years. >> bill: i thought that biden did a particularly good job in telling the american people who barack obama is. and this guy is a guy who really -- as he said, has a backbone of steel. and he talked about the auto industry. he said you can't do this. it is impossible. it is not worth it. mitt romney was saying let them collapse. barack obama went against the tide. and look at the results.

really paid off for the american people. and then secondly, the decision about whether or not to go after osama bin laden. he had made that pledge. and he carried through with that pledge. you know, it's a side of barack obama we don't usually hear about, right? the rap is he's too professorial or too aloof. i thought biden really nailed it last night. >> i can't agree with you more. biden helped solidify what michelle obama started on tuesday night at this convention here in charlotte. what michelle talked about was the essence of the president and the spirit of the president. she talked about how the president stays up at night reading the letters of the people who write him. michelle, i can't believe people are going through this. biden said, one of the words was you know, he's been tested. i've seen him at his toughest time. i've seen him at the hardest times and he is battle-tested and ready to go. that led perfectly into the president's speech. >> bill: it did indeed. the goal of this convention, of course, there were several

goals. one is to fire up the base. and everybody -- look you can't re-create all the magic of 2008. but part of the driving force i think, maybe the main driving force for barack obama in 2008 were young people. young democrats young people, college campuses. you're policy director of the young democrats. did this convention succeed, do you think in firing up young people to reengage though who were there -- those who were there in 2008 and this year's young people to get involved? >> i think you're right on this. that's exactly what happened. in 2008, there was hope and change and they were fired up and now we have to protect that change. that's what we saw. starting out with michelle obama on monday when her line was and it is a line i repeated over and over again this weekend. we were so in love, we were so in debt. and then president clinton added to that talking about the student loan debt crisis. over $1 trillion of money, of debt is accumulated in this

country, more than credit card debt. i got a chance to talk to janet schakowsky from illinois about that. and i think -- as every democrat knows, this is a big issue. what we've seen from republicans is no clear plan on how to help the students. no clear plan on how to help the millennials that the president talked about loan debt once again in his speech last night. we didn't hear from mitt romney or paul ryan or anybody at the republican party. the only person that touched on education was condoleezza rice talking about k-12. not college debt. and you know, i think the president hit that one out of park. he was in a field all by himself because the republicans hasn't put forward a solution on that. >> bill: richard fowler is our guest here. we save a seat at the table for you all the time. i know you're watching and you want to talk about it. give us a call at 1-866-55-press here on the "full court press." last night's speeches to the convention. accepting the nomination on the part of vice president joe biden

and president barack obama. richard, you touched on tampa. i have been -- you said you have been quoting michelle obama. i have been quoting you. ever since i appeared on your show the other day. because -- so i'm not going to steal your line. i'm going to let you use how you summed up the convention that you saw in tampa. >> listen, there's three words to it. i'm happy that you've been quoting me. that's always the goal. pale stale and male at the convention in tampa. >> bill: it looked like a bunch of old farts who were trying to protect their tax returns or something. >> you know, i think to go further on the pale, male comment, they're trying to protect pale people, male people, stale people and fetuses. if you're not one of those, it is not your best. the secretary of the democratic

party, she opened up this convention on tuesday. she came out and she said the words that i have been saying all weekend. this crowd looks like america. and that is so true. you saw african-americans latinos, hispanics lgbt, disabled individuals, there were so many people in this arena that represented the essence of who we are as america, it was unbelievable. >> bill: absolutely. dick durbin made that point too. you looked at that crowd. this is america. you couldn't say that in tampa. >> you definitely couldn't say that in tampa. >> bill: joe madison told me that there were 48 african-american delegates total. in tampa. >> yep. there were hundreds here. maybe in the thousands. >> bill: they probably had to go recruit the 48. [ laughter ] >> they did recruit davis. they found one new one. >> bill: condoleezza rice. we could probably name them

between the two of us. where do you think moving forward -- one other point. you mentioned the president and several other speakers focused michelle obama starting with her, on student loans. it has been a very -- it has been a big priority for the president and the first lady and for the vice president. and democrats in congress as well, not the republicans. one other area where the president went last night and mitt romney never never, in his speech never once mentioned the war in afghanistan, the war in iraq veterans or military families. which i thought was really remarkable. >> that is beyond remarkable. in high school, i've said this also -- i feel as though -- when you get to the end of the weeks you start repeating what you've been saying earlier in the week. i did high school debate. we talked about how you -- >> bill: i did it. >> you know. you flow your arguments. >> bill: yeah. >> i think mitt romney conceded a whole sheet of paper. they conceded the foreign policy

debate to the president. they seeded the veterans debate to the president and the president, not only did he extend those arguments last night but he also basically said listen, this is why you can vote for me. if there's no other reason, vote for me because i care about our veterans. i take our veterans lives seriously. as president, i have to send people to war. i've hugged their parents and i've hugged their loved ones and i won't put our troops in harm's way for no reason and beyond that point you know, we have done everything we can in foreign policy. i think it makes an inflection point from what we saw from mitt romney. hinted to the fact he would be willing to go into iran. so i think there is a complete distinction with president obama and mitt romney and we know the american people do not want another war. >> bill: one of the most powerful points, i thought of the president's speech last night, dan let me ask you to pull up that byte from the president here. where he talked about failings

and he recognized that he didn't necessarily get everything right and it is such a huge job and he quoted abraham lincoln. i thought it was very, very moving. if we can listen to that. >> i'm far more mindful of my own failings knowing exactly what lincoln meant when he said i have been driven to my knees many times by the overwhelming conviction that i have no place else to go. >> bill: i never heard that quote that lincoln quote. >> that was one of my favorite parts of the speech. one thing i said going into the speech, the president has to look at american people in the face he has looked them in the camera and said listen, this has not been perfect. this presidency hasn't been perfect but even though i have made mistakes, i wake up every morning thinking about how we can fix them. >> bill: i think people want to hear that. they want a recognition of it is humility and reality and it is look, i've do not best i can. i know i didn't get everything

which i think speaks to the really -- the root of independents is governor charlie crist. governor charlie crist addressed this convention in support for the president. if there is anybody who understands what it takes -- what it takes to really have -- be an independent, it is charlie crist. his own party kicked him out because of what he believed, because he realized that $3 billion to create a high-speed rail would create jobs in florida and republicans didn't want to create jobs. he wasn't the right person to be the senate nominee. charlie crist spoke to what it takes. you have to work together, work across the aisle. that's what independents wanted to hear. that's a distinction. >> bill: charlie crist realized no matter who you are if the president of the united states comes into your state the right thing to do is go into the airport and greet him and after all of the help that fema had provided with the hurricanes and say hey, thank you! >> most definitely. >> bill: it was crazy shari is

obama. well, that did it. she said no, there's no way i'm voting for obama. he has ruined this country. he has view just ruined us. he's taken everything away. we have no rights. i told her well, you wait if romney gets in there you're not going to have no social security. she said oh no, nothing's going to happen to my social security. it's safe forever. and i said well, it may be safe for you but you got a daughter there and she's not going to have any. she went on. i said you know, he saved the auto industry. i was trying to explain to her. he saved the auto industry. she said no. he didn't do that. mitt romney is the one that saved the auto industry. >> bill: oh, god! oh, my god. shari, you know, lincoln did say one time, there's always some fleas a dog can't catch. it sounds like that woman -- hey, shari good to hear from you. but that message about medicaid,

medicare, social security. obviously not everybody heard it but i thought the democrats did a pretty good job this week of telling the truth about that. >> they did. they did exactly right. i think the truth is the keyword here. we heard paul ryan say he wouldn't tock touch your medicaid. we know from the pathway to prosperity budget, that's just not true. they plan on gutting medicaid, gutting social security to give tax cuts to their millionaire and billionaire friend who are funding the election. all of the other millionaires who were basically -- that's the thing about this whole situation. people feel as they're going to come in here and change this country. have they realized where the money is coming from for mitt romney and paul ryan to win? do you think they'll want to get paid back? >> bill: they're coming from casinos in macau. i love last night when joe biden said look, yeah, they want to get rid of medicare and and replace it with voucher care. that's a good phrase.

accepting their party's nomination, making the case for the american people. why president obama needs another four years. what do you mean he hasn't accomplished anything. in the last four years. what about ending two wars. what about delivering on healthcare. what about saving the auto industry. or as joe biden summed it up last night, osama bin laden is dead. and general motors is alive. we'll talk about that and a whole lot more here. but first, take time out to get the latest, today's current news update from lisa ferguson in los angeles. hi lisa. good morning. it is up to you now. >> hi, bill. good morning everyone. obviously president obama had the big address of the night but there are a few other speakers we want to mention. one, of course, is vice president joe biden who had 38 minutes to sell the american people on the president's first term in office. he said that mr. obama is willing to make the gutsy choices that mitt romney is not. >> this man has courage in his

soul, compassion in his heart and a spine of steel. osama bin laden is dead. general motors is alive. >> biden's speech did go over quite well although he got a bit of criticism on twitter for overusing the word literally. the transcription service has him down at nine times sparking people to mock him with the hash tag literally and start a drinking game every time he said the word. and let's not forget the speech by current tv's very own jennifer granholm who had the entire crowd on their feet! literally. >> the calvary arrived and our new president, barack obama came in! he organized the rescue. he made the tough calls. and he saved the american auto industry! >> one of other most popular lines as we heard earlier on

north carolina, is a ghost town. ain't nobody here but us chickens this morning. they're tearing it down. the stands down, taking the podium down, taking all of the bunting down and everything. in back of us, radio row which as you know for the last three days has been bustling with all kinds of people broadcasting from here and we're the only ones broadcasting here. karl frisch is a loyal friend from bullfight strategies. he made his way through here through the tough security. >> i couldn't sit down or lay down. my legs have been standing for so long that they're not physically able of bending. >> bill: getting into the convention hall was running the gauntlet of one security checkpoint after the other. >> on average to get down here, it would take me an hour to two hours to get down here. >> bill: right. >> i left -- same amount of time i normally would during the convention. you never know. i didn't want to be late.

president. then there are always some off the wall people like an actress or actor here and there. they had clint eastwood. we had eva longoria. >> i thought she did great. >> bill: she had advice about who should get a tax cut. >> the eva long longoria who worked at wendy's flipping burgers needs a tax break but the eva longoria who works on movies does not. >> this is how powerful the speech was when you were leading up to mentioning her that's the quote that i was thinking of. and the fact that after three days of nonstop speeches hour after hour, usually starting at 5:00 p.m. and ending after 11:00, i remember that quote from her. >> bill: absolutely. we'll talk more about this. every night there's been one of the secondary line of speakers that's broken through.

lifestyles." mars simply doesn't want anyone trademarking a deep fried mars bar. >> do you know how many times they tried to type that press release but the keys were so sticky they couldn't get it done. >> bill: do you think they're going to stop anybody from deep frying mars bars? >> no. the only thing that will stop anyone from eating one of those is a coronary. why does dan sound is rested? this is not fair, bill. >> headlines out of hollywood. actor james franco is being sued by his former film professor from new york university. jose santana going after the hollywood star because he lost his job after giving franco a deed because he never showed up to class. the "new york post" reports franco said santana was a bad teacher and learned nothing by attending the directing class in 2011 so he never bothered to go but he never withdrew from the class so he got the d letter grade. santana claims he lost the job because of the publicity surrounding the incident and he was only looking to hold franco

to the same standards as his other students so now he's suing for big money. >> bill: why didn't i think of that? suing my teachers for bad grades? >> can you do that retroactively? >> bill: we'll find out. >> they say everything is bigger in texas. and that includes the speed limit. a new toll road that will soon open between austin and san antonio will have the highest speed limit in the country. 85 miles per hour. according to nbc news, the texas department of transportation determined that parts of the 41-mile stretch were safe to travel at the high-speed. you know that many states already have 70-mile-per-hour speed limits. congress repealed the national 55-mile-per-hour speed limit back in 1995. >> i could have sworn we had -- >> bill: 85 miles per hour? >> bill, you have to understand. ever since rick perry dropped out of the presidential race, he's been looking for people to easily able to get to his n word ranch vacation destinations which he launched shortly after

abandoning his race. >> bill: but you know, the thing about it is if the speed limit is 85, people are going to go 95. >> i seem to remember there were states with no speed limits. didn't montana have no speed limit in stretches of its freeway? >> bill: i don't know. at any rate, as we mentioned it is all just clutter and workers tearing things down this morning here at the convention center. we picked up some of the leftover signs this morning. >> nice. >> bill: from the crowd. obviously this one to president obama. thank you. fired up. ready to go. >> or as the case might be, ready to joe. which was on the signs last night. >> bill: of course, the theme you heard the speakers use this over and over again. forward, forward forward. so karl, i mentioned the -- some of the secondary speakers. duvall patrick the first night for sure. emmanuel clever, the second

night. last night, we were so proud of -- we're so proud of her! count tv, jennifer granholm, don't you think? >> she was amazing. i was sitting there typing on my cell phone sending her an e-mail saying that was an amazing -- during her speech, i'm typing this e-mail hoping that the internet -- everybody was on line. you could tell the popular speeches with your technology because they had really good wireless in the building. but whenever there was a moment when people would be snapping lots of pictures and trying to upload them to twitter or facebook things would slow down a bit and not really free up until there was a lull. and you could not get through the internet during governor granholm's speech. i think that's a testament to how popular it was. >> bill: the twitter world was on fire with comments about jennifer granholm. she had many great lines. i think that she really nailed mitt romney on his car elevator. >> people who design and build and sell those cars, well, in

romney's world the cars get the elevator and the workers get the shaft! [ cheers & applause ] >> golden! absolutely golden. that was just one of them. if you did not watch it, go to your computer and find it because it was phenomenal! >> bill: jennifer granholm, the host of "the war room" every night at 9:00 p.m. eastern on current tv. former governor of michigan. and then, karl, vice president joe biden. >> absolutely. >> bill: we know sometimes joe biden goes off the reservation. he's for real. my home state of delaware, we love him because joe is very authentic. >> he's literally the most authentic vice president we've literally ever had. >> bill: last night his job was to tell, i think the world who barack obama really is from somebody who has been up close and worked with him and been there with him when he made all of the tough decisions.

here karl is joe biden talking about barack obama's backbone. >> time and time again i witnessed him summon it. this man has courage in his soul compassion in his heart and a spine of steel! >> it was a really good speech. you know, what was interesting if you compare that to the republican convention, the republican convention, the spin was they're trying to personalize the candidates because people don't like them, right? the big mistake that they made in doing only that was that people -- they're not just looking to like mitt romney. in order to cast their ballot for him. they want to know the direction he'll take the country. and if you can't connect the personality and the character with how that dictates your policies you can't win the white house. and the vice president's speech last night did a very effective

job of painting the picture of who barack obama is as a man and how that influences the policies he pursues. >> bill: i agree. i mean i learned things about barack obama from joe biden last night. i think we learned also about -- stuff about joe biden. you can see why barack obama's really come to trust him. there have been relation -- times when like a dan quayle, nobody ever thought dan quayle had anything -- made any contribution at all to the administration of george h. w. bush. president and vice president have lunch together every week. in the morning briefing, the vice president is there with the president. when any heads of state come in, when there are any important meetings the vice president is there. he is very much a part of the team. they are a real solid team which is why i always thought that this -- i supported hillary clinton in the primary. i'm a big hillary fan. all of this talk for the last

two years that obama was going to dump joe biden and put hillary clinton in. >> mostly by republicans that try to get that brought up, too. when barack obama was going to choose a running mate, he could have chosen anybody. he could have chosen somebody that was really popular with the base of the party not that joe biden is not but he could have chosen somebody different. he could have pulled -- done the romney approach and picked the most reactionary member of congress he could find. but he picked somebody who had an excellent reputation on the hill. a former judiciary chairman. and somebody that he knew from the campaign trail. a former rival of his. it shows that they've been able to get very close over these last three years working together. >> bill: then the president of course, had to get his message across as to -- i think the main thing -- show the american people where he wants to take the country over the

next four years and that this is a real choice. it is a choice between two different paths. the president made clear, people understood last night what he's saying, where he wants to take the country is not necessarily the easy approach. here's president obama. >> now i won't pretend the path i'm overing is quick or -- i'm offering is quick or easy. i never have. you didn't elect me to tell you what you wanted to hear. you elected me to tell you the truth. >> bill: i thought that was -- not so subtle dig at what we heard from tampa too, right? >> yeah. we didn't hear much of policy from -- >> bill: didn't hear much of the truth either. >> no. well and part of it is that they know if they talk about their policies, then people will be reminded that they're for vouchers for medicare and so on and so on. what the president did last night that was remarkably effective, going into the speech whether he would be able to close the deal by talking about, you know, what he's done.

but really emphasizing that there's so much more to do, right. there are so many people out there that still hurt and need work. how do you talk about creating almost five million private sector jobs without being like oh, and we're not done yet. he did a really seamless job of marrying those two messages. and the speech had a little bit for everybody. and the broader population that was looking for their president to say i'm not done and here's exactly what we're going to do together. they got exactly what they needed. >> bill: real uplifting. i love at the end how he was able to bring citizenship in and hope and change. it is still alive. 1-866-55-press. join the conversation here on the "full court press." we're here with karl frisch from bullfight strategies. let's talk about the big wrap-up last night to the democratic national convention on today's "full court press." good to have you with us. >> announcer: this is the "bill press show."

biden go on the road to portsmouth new hampshire for a great big first campaign event. karl, let's say hello to gabrielle out in the red state of utah. good morning. >> caller: hi, how you doing bill? >> bill: are you a progressive living in utah? >> caller: i guess i'm an independent, i would say. >> bill: must get pretty lonely out there for a progressive. what's your comment gabrielle? >> caller: i'm a coal miner out here in utah. i just wanted to make a stark contrast about the statements of the two different candidates made at the conventions. >> bill: uh-huh. >> caller: mitt romney said something to the effect that barack obama said he was going to heal the planet. he was going to bring us all together and heal the planet which i took as a jab toward global warming. he says i'm there to take care of you and your family. i got news for him. the only thing that takes care

of me and my family is my hands. barack obama i think when he was talking about global warming last night not being a hoax and you know, i think that pretty much showed his backbone right there. he talked about all the coal miners out here, they say barack obama is going to shut down the coal mines. i've been hearing that for four years. until an election year, we all started getting laid off. so i'm not -- i don't know if -- >> bill: i'll tell you gabrielle, the people who say that are the ones who say barack obama is going to take your guns away. his energy policy, i've heard it said is all of the above. it is coal, natural gas. it is nuclear. and it's particularly for the first time, solar and wind and other things as well. but it is everything. >> and there's nothing in the world you can tell certain people fox news types that will change their mind on that. i did think that one thing you know, toward the romney end of

things that was particularly compelling from a speech is when he's telling his personal story and saying you know, i have -- and this relates to gabrielle, i miss the times when my boys would be in a pile at the foot of the bed. i miss the times of being a father is what he was trying to say. i couldn't help but think that's great but there are families across this country that have their children piled up at the foot of the bed because all they can afford is a one bedroom apartment. and mitt romney's policies aren't for the families that can only afford the one bedroom apartment. they're for families like his where it is a luxury to have the kids at the foot of the bed. >> bill: but karl, you know, if you want to start a business, or you want to go to graduate school and you don't have the money, you just ask your parents. for a loan. >> right. you pull yourself up by their bootstraps. >> bill: why didn't we think of that? >> i don't know. >> bill: karl, great to have you down here in charlotte. we'll see you back in d.c. in our studio. terry o'neill, president of the

hey, terry good to see you. >> bill, it is great to see you again. >> bill: pretty good convention, don't you think? >> i think it way exceeded expectations. the level of excitement at this convention has built from tuesday evening right after -- >> bill: michelle obama. >> unbelievable home run speech. and then wednesday. by yesterday morning walking around and going to the events with different caucuses, the place really was electric and crowded. and people were excited! >> bill: a little loud in the background here. i just wanted to see what was going on. i thought all of the delegates went home. i guess these three were sleeping. they're part of the cleanup crew here this morning. sorry. we might tell them that there's something going on here. i want to hear terry o'neill i don't want to hear them.

for women, this was a particularly important convention. >> you know, it absolutely was. and it -- the republican party has demonstrated that they are prepared to continue this war on women. in a huge, huge way. they have not backed off of attacking women's access to reproductive healthcare, attacking women's economic security by voucherizing medicare and slashing medicaid and cutting social security and then cutting all of the social programs that women rely on disproportionately. we had elizabeth warren and tammy baldwin and so many inspiring women and so many men who have made it clear bill, that i think -- i think a lot of people may have missed it or if you're not really looking at it from a certain angle we've turned a corner. i don't know when it happened. maybe in the early 2000s the reality is over 90% of the people in this country think women should have fully equal rights with men. the radical fringe which has

taken over the republican party is not there. but the vast majority of people in this country are there. and you see it in the men who are paying attention to women's abortion rights and understand that there is a connection between our access to reproductive healthcare and our economic security and our ability to provide economic security for our families. >> bill: the -- i heard alice the secretary of the democratic national committee say the first day of this convention that one big contrast between charlotte and tampa that fully -- a little over 50% of the delegates to this convention, women. >> right. >> bill: i would have to go back and do the research but looking at the speakers here at this convention, at least half of them were women. i wanted to mention jennifer granholm from current tv. >> jennifer granholm who was fabulous! >> bill: phenomenal. >> absolutely phenomenal. >> bill: you go through, the women members of congress, nancy

pelosi, dianne feinstein barbara boxer i mean it went on and on and on. so for women voters across the land, this convention had a pretty strong message didn't it? every speaker from president obama on down, i thought asserted the democratic party's commitment to letting women be the ones who decide what happens to their own bodies. >> that's absolutely right. this is an election where the choice could not be more clear. president obama fully supports women's access to reproductive healthcare including abortion care and birth control. governor romney -- >> bill: don't say president. >> get that out of your head. governor romney and paul ryan, representative ryan are dedicated to, for example passing a personhood amendment which would declare that life begins at conception. this criminalizes all abortion.

paul ryan has said that he thinks that women who are impregnated as a result of rape should not have access to terminate that pregnancy. he is -- >> bill: young womens, girls victims of incest. >> women with breast cancer or heart disease whose bit control fails who now have to terminate their pregnancy to protect their health no. no abortion for you. in fact, paul ryan has referred to rape as a means of conception. indirectly, it is not clear when you look -- there is a view to it. when you look at it, he's request asked the question, do you think victims of rape should be able to access abortion. i'm proud of my pro-life record. there are many means of conception. he doesn't say it directly but man, you get the impression that he is completely heartless and clueless when it comes to women. both. >> bill: terry o'neill is the president of the national organization for women. now.

your calls and your comments about this convention, particularly as it impacts and affects women's issues and the message that came out always welcome at 1-866-55-press. terry, i want to clarify something because mitt romney, on this issue seems to want to have it both ways. okay. we know at one time, he was pro-choice. and now, officially, he is anti-choice. but he says he would unlike the republican party's platform, allow for health, life of the mother, exceptions for that or rape or incest. but at the same time, he has endorsed the human life amendment, right? >> sure. >> bill: which is a total ban on abortion for any -- so where is he on this issue? >> well, once he comes out in favor of the personhood amendment, he cannot run away from the conclusion that he's, in fact, totally against women. let's be clear. one in three women will have an abortion before the age of 45.

it is a common and necessary aspect of women's reproductive healthcare. and as soon as you start even pursing out, bill, which women get to terminate their pregnancies and which women don't, you're already anti-woman. so mitt romney, right now going around saying that he opposes abortion, even if he's willing to make exceptions for rape or incest, or women's life and by the way he's never -- lately, in the past six weeks he has not said he's willing to make an exception even for a woman to protect her own health. paul ryan, his running mate has been on the floor of the house of representatives railing against the possibility that women could have an abortion to protect their health. oh the health exception is a bad thing, he said. it is so broad that you could drive a truck through it because his assumption is that women are liars and cheaters. paul ryan has such disdain for women that he doesn't think we should have the right to protect our own health when a pregnancy is threatening our health.

and mitt romney really can't run away from that. >> bill: is there any difference between paul ryan and todd akin? >> no. i don't think there's any daylight between them at all. they both cosponsored a series of legislation that is anti-woman anti-reproductive healthcare. todd akin, believe it or not is not the only individual who promotes this idea that there's legitimate rape and then there's women's false claims of rape. and that if a woman is quote-unquote legitimately raped, her body has ways of shutting that whole thing down. >> bill: it's magic. sort of like it can distinguish an unfriendly sperm from a friendly sperm. >> yes. and that is so damaging to victims of sexual assault. that kind of notion which floats around in many communities has made many women who are victims of sexual assault feel that

their own bodies have betrayed them. so they're assaulted by the rape and then they're assaulted by the community that tells them that if they're impregnated somehow their bodies were not operating properly, that's their fault. >> bill: so women got the strong message there's no doubt if women of america, women voters out there watched tampa and watched charlotte -- >> oh, yeah. >> bill: they got a total totally different message. >> absolutely. >> bill: and now they have a choice. the president kept coming back to that last night. which i thought was so powerful. on every issue right? whether it is energy. or whether it's environment or whether it's immigration or whether it's women's health. there's a clear choice. >> absolutely. >> bill: clear choice. clearest choice we've had between two candidates in over a generation. >> oh, yeah. >> bill: and now, will women hear that message, will they make that choice? and we'll find out more about what the national organization

energized. absolutely pumped to go back into their communities. go door-to-door. drag their families and their friends, talk to their coworkers, really, really, again, get the word out. what's at stake here and get people to the polls and vote. republicans have only two things going for them in this election in my opinion. one is unlimited funds for advertising on the air. in which they have openly said they will not be deterred by facts. >> bill: no. don't let the facts get in the way. >> and two voter suppression. that was another thing that was really brought to the fore in this convention is that we are not going to tolerate the voter suppression. we are going to be there and help people, that the republicans are targeting those who don't normally vote for them. that would be younger women older women persons of color. voters in the imgrant community. they're trying to suppress votes all along there. we're not going to stand for it. >> bill: students of course as well. quickly, mark is calling from newton north carolina.
